Hey KHS Robotics Team Members!

This is the Ultra Ninja wanting to update you guys on how the meeting with Ben Logan went along with our year so far, and what our goals need to be in the coming weeks.

For anyone who did not make it, the meeting with Ben Logan’s Robotics team last Thursday went very well, and we learned some invaluable information about the build season and how the robot actually goes together.  Mr. David Thompson, a Honda engineer and mentor of Ben Logan’s team, showed us their robot from last year, Jack, and talked about how they built it sharing their FFA’s workshop.  Also, we got to see the practice field they made for the robot last year and their robot’s shipping crate, two things our mechanical team will have to build this year.

More specifically, we learned of some ideas and and steps we’re going to have to take to make this year of robotics run better.

-  We will assign a Safety Officer to make sure that everyone on the team is always operating in a safe manner, namely to make a safety protocol for everyone to follow.  The officials at FIRST often go around during competitions, checking in on teams to make sure they are handling tools and parts of the robot safely, and points are awarded or docked based on how ‘safe’ a team is deemed.

-  Also, there will be a Rules Officer named during the build season to check up on the rules of the FIRST competition daily, as often measurements, technicalities, and guidelines pertaining to the competition will be changed sporadically while we’re building.  FIRST either wants to make sure that no one is exploiting loopholes in the game design while they construct robots, or they simply like messing with us…

-  Ben Logan has had parents regularly bring in food to 12 hour build marathons during the construction season, as it keeps everyone working instead of going to eat, and allows some team members to save money instead of spending it each night on fast food.  We will have a meeting with parents sometime this winter to request mentors, professional and otherwise.

As you can tell, we have a lot of work, as this is just a short list of items on our plate for the next 3 months.  Right now, everyone needs to be focusing on selling tickets to our Fazoli’s dinner Friday night, and the fundraising team will have to have a meeting on more grant opportunities.  Until then, remember our meeting for next Wednesday, where we will start assigning jobs and brainstorming ideas as to what we will call the team, and make our mascot.

-With honor, the Ultra Ninja
